In Bruges
Starring: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes
The Reel Review, By Jamie Bradley
Feb 27, 2008

What is there to say about hit men with a conscience and principals? Well apparently about an hour and half's worth of funny, uncensored, cruel, real-world movie magic. This hilarious film, set in the heart of medieval Europe, is a tragic comedy (if there ever was such a thing) of two men with a job that only the heartless Grinch would take: murder. When the two main characters of the story (Farrell and Gleeson) are ordered by their employer (Fiennes) to go to Bruges and await their next order, they take us on a tour of the "dream like" Bruges. They find themselves mixed up with drug dealers, a movie star midget, and prostitutes all in the same scene! But all the fun is taken away when one of the hit men is ordered to kill his partner in crime.

The basic premise of the movie may have already been done in Mr. & Mrs. Smith but they are total opposites of each other, with respect to BranGelina this film is just different than the high tech hit man/woman film they starred in. "In Bruges" gives the audience the pleasure of surprise and a Tarantino-esque mind warp. As a person who completely dislikes Tarantino, I use the comparison lightly because "In Bruges" is way too clever to sink to the level of any of Tarantino's films. The film does not present many typical Hollywood type elements that are used to attract a big audience (e.g. big action scenes with explosions). What this film does offer is good acting with a script that has not been dumbed down so it can have a pg-13 rating and attract a younger crowd. Instead the language itself is crafted very well into making a witty and satirical film.

To sum it up: 3½ out of 4 Skulls
