In George Clooney's first movie- as a director- his choice in scripts was not the best. In what was originally a slapstick comedy that had been sitting in the closet for 17 years should have stayed locked away. In a not so witty and lack luster romance, Leatherheads has failed to deliver the winning touchdown. Leatherheads is loosely based on a true story but that fact alone does not merit my $10. Neither does Clooney or Zellweger.
The film seems to linger on in a dull and sarcastic way. There is no creativity to the plot for the first 3/4 of the movie. Since this is a George Clooney film people want to see two hours of him. But this movie is designed for B actors and should only be slated for 90-100 minutes. In fact the expectations might have been lowered if some other actors played in lieu of Clooney and Zellweger and then I would have expected to see an average movie.
The plot of the film is over simplified and the wit and romance just did not latch on to my attention resulting in my twiddling of my thumbs. The last 20 minutes or so did have an ah-ha! moment but it was too little to late. I will give Clooney another chance for his directing career but the choice in scripts must have some more substance to it.
