A complex story that takes place in 1971 London, The Bank Job starring Jason Statham (The Transporter and The Italian Job), is based on a true bank robbery that involves a royal sex scandal. The story was originally prevented from being told because of a D-notice government gag order, allegedly to protect a prominent member of the British Royal Family. According to the producers, this movie is intended to reveal the truth for the first time, although it includes significant elements of fiction and the extent to which it represents historical fact is difficult to determine. Taking into mind the complexity of the side stories, and the surprising action that follows the robbing of the bank, the film is an entertaining plot mixed with sturdy English actors.
This movie is fun. Plain and simple: fun. There is no real premise behind it with double meaning, except for another case of political officials having sex on the taxpayer's dime. But this movie has certain characteristics that are unique to overused plots such as a bank robbery. And I must say that I was a bit judgmental of the title before seeing the movie. I thought it might have been boring and more of the same. However, what grabbed my attention was that the film is based on a historical account of a real bank robbery and that it happened to involve British royalty and a controversial civil rights leader named Michael X (not to be confused with Malcolm X).
All in all the film is worth the trip and the money.
