The Reel Review, By Jamie Bradley
Feb 18, 2008

For all you romantic comedy junkies out there, and so-called "chick flick" lovers, this movie will 'definitely, maybe' be worth your money. The movie largely takes place in the past during the lowly times of the first Bush regimen when our star actor of the movie, Ryan Reynolds, is in New York City helping to campaign for Bill Clinton. The movie focuses on the nostalgic character of Will Hayes (Reynolds) and his inability to cope with many of life's twists and turns, as displayed in his hopelessly drunken passed out on the couch scenes. The story line is based off of his adorable daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), who persistently asks her father for the complex story of how he met her mother. The majority of the comedy comes during the time warp when we see Will interacting with the three women in his life that are the candidates for Maya's mother. As complex as the love life of the insatiable William Hayes, we come to the end of the movie with a happy ending. And of course we know who the real mother is.

Maybe it is because of the lack of quality in the romantic comedy films coming from Hollywood or the low expectations we have for these types of movies, but the story and character development is not half-bad. The movie may lack that initial plunge that would be required to keep you entertained for the first hour, but the last 30 or so minutes is quite revealing. The writers supplied just enough humor to make it a romantic comedy and not a romantic flop and for that I thank them. The best part of the movie is Maya, the way too mature for her age little girl who keeps us wanting more movies like Little Miss Sunshine.

To sum it up: 2½ out of 4 Skulls
