Ice Nine Kills
Jeremy & Spencer of Ice Nine Kills, Interview By Mandy Pauline
March 5th, 2008

MP:
Hey guys, so I'm loving your new album "The Burning". Who writes the lyrics and what was the inspiration for the album?
INK:
Jeremy - I wrote most of the lyrics for the album. I guess I'd say most of the inspiration came from personal experiences, i.e. Relationships, a cheating whore of a girlfriend, addiction... etc. Except for "The Greatest Story Ever Told" Which was sort of based off of a crazy news article I read in the Boston Globe and I just kinda elaborated on it.

Spencer - The most honest stuff that i come up with lyrically is when i am depressed or angry. Writing can be a very therapeutic experience for me.
MP:
It's so hard to pick a favorite song, but mine is "Build Your Own Disaster". What's your favorite song off of "The Burning?"
INK:
Jeremy – I'd say my favorite is "You Scratched My Anchor" just because it has that dirty southern-rock vibe to it, so its fun to rock out to live.

Spencer - "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is a song people are really starting to embrace. It definitely encompasses all the various styles we are influenced by. For that reason it would have to be my favorite.
MP:
This is your first album on Red Blue Records. How do you think you've grown since getting signed?
INK:
Jeremy – RBR has been a great fit for us. We've known Mike (the owner) for a while now, and when he approached us to sign with RBR he seemed to be on the same page as us, as far as how we wanted to market ourselves, which was cool. We’re also able to play a large role in the decision making that the label makes for our band. So it feels more like a partnership between INK and RBR, which I think is a lot healthier than being ‘just another band on a label'.

Spencer - Mike is exactly like us, really hard working and driven. That's really the only way you can be in such a competitive business. Mike really believed in us when alot of other people didn't, there is definitely something to be said for that.
MP:
You have such a unique sound. Who are your greatest influences, musically?
INK:
Spencer - First of all, thanks alot for calling us unique. That's definitely awesome to hear. As far as musical influences, I'm all over the place. I love metal, hardcore, pop, punk, ska, folk, acoustic. To me, good music is good music, regardless of genre.

Jeremy – I'd have to agree with Spence on that one; if it's good, then I want to listen to it. If I had to get specific, I'd say I tend to listen to 'poppier' bands like Third Eye Blind, Brand New, Midtown, Les Miserables, and Blink.
MP:
What artist or bands are you listening to these days?
INK:
Jeremy – He is Legend's "I am Hollywood", ill Scarlett's "Clearly in Another Fine Mess", Into The Moat's "The Design", and Weezer's "Pinkerton".

Spencer - currently in heavy rotation on my ipod would be Kane Hodder, Cat Stevens, August Burns Red, Just Surrender, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Emmure, Fall of Troy.
MP:
So you guys are currently on tour here in the U.S. How is it going?
INK:
Spencer - This is the first time we have been out for more then 2 weeks so it's been a really interesting experience. We have been playing in alot of cities i have never been to and we are meeting alot of cool people on the way. It's funny, we get back home in about a week, and all i am thinking about is starting the next tour!
MP:
What city has been your favorite to play? Why?
INK:
Spencer - To pick just one is too hard, i would have to say the best reactions we have had so far have been in Pittsburgh, Texas, Florida, and South Carolina. We were all blown away by how many people came out to see us in those locations, especially considering it's our first real tour.

Jeremy - Ya, it's definitely been unreal playing shows in cities we've never been to before and having tons of kids screaming all our lyrics. It's awesome.
MP:
What is your favorite song to play live?
INK:
Spencer - Last Words

Spencer - Dead is the New Black
MP:
Tell me the craziest thing that has happened on tour.
INK:
Jeremy – While we were driving to a show in Montana, we hit a patch of ice going 60 and jack-knifed our trailer before launching off the highway into a ditch full of alligators... Well there wasn't really any alligators, but it was still sketchy crashing our van.

Spencer - Yea. I thought we were gonna die.
MP:
When you're on the road and not playing a show, how do you spend your time?
INK:
Jeremy – Well besides skiing and surfing whenever we get the opportunity, we usually hit up the local malls with our iPods and 'The Burning'. We go around to all the kids in the malls and get them to listen to our album, and if they like it, they can buy it from us right there. Its just another way we try to get our music out to potential fans.

Spencer - I watch splatter films in the van.
MP:
So what is next for INK?
INK:
Jeremy – As for now we're just gonna keep doing what we're doing. Touring the country, promoting the album. When we wrote the 'The Burning,' we just wrote songs that sounded cool to us. We're just lucky enough that other people find the songs cool too.

Spencer - Tour our asses off
MP:
What do you want to say to your fans or the readers of Gloom?
INK:
Spencer - Thanks alot for supporting this band. Please come out to a show and buy us a drink...or 2

Spencer - or six... And if you get a chance, check out our new album "The Burning" on myspace.com/iceninekills and tell us what you think.
